How to Care for Engineered Oak Floors: A Practical Guide
The right maintenance routine extends the life of your floor by decades.
Daily care
Sweep or vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment to remove grit that can scratch the finish. Microfibre dust mops work well for daily maintenance. Avoid beater-bar vacuum heads — they can dent the surface.
Place doormats at all entrances to catch grit and moisture before it reaches the floor. Sand and small stones carried in on shoes are the primary cause of surface scratching.
Weekly cleaning
Damp mop with a pH-neutral timber floor cleaner diluted per the manufacturer's instructions. We recommend WOCA Master Cleaner for lacquered finishes — it cleans effectively without stripping the protective coating.
Never use steam mops, vinegar, or all-purpose cleaners. These products can break down the lacquer finish and cause irreversible damage. Excess water is the single biggest cause of preventable damage to engineered floors.
What to avoid
No steam mops — the combination of heat and moisture penetrates the finish and can delaminate the wear layer.
No wet mopping — a damp mop is fine, a wet mop is not. If you can see water pooling, you are using too much.
No vinegar or ammonia-based cleaners — they strip the lacquer finish.
No wax or polish on lacquered finishes — they create a buildup that dulls the surface.
No dragging furniture — use felt pads on all chair and table legs. Keep pet nails trimmed.
When to refinish
A 3-4mm wear layer can be sanded and refinished 2-3 times over its lifetime, effectively extending the floor's life to 50+ years with proper care.
Signs you need refinishing:
• The finish has worn through to bare timber in high-traffic areas • Water no longer beads on the surface • Scratches are visible from standing height • The floor looks dull even after cleaning
Refinishing involves light sanding to remove the existing finish, followed by reapplication of lacquer or oil. A professional can typically complete a 100m² area in 2-3 days.
