Why European oak dominates
European oak (Quercus robur) has a tight, consistent grain structure that takes stains and finishes predictably. It is harder than most Australian species used for flooring (Janka rating ~6 kN), machines cleanly, and is available in quantities that support large-scale projects.
Unlike Australian hardwoods — which are beautiful but variable in colour, grain, and availability — European oak delivers consistency across large orders. This matters for architects specifying 500m²+ projects where batch consistency is critical.
Engineered vs solid in Australian conditions
Australia's climate — hot summers, variable humidity, and hydronic heating in premium homes — makes engineered construction essential for most applications.
A 3-4mm European oak wear layer over a eucalyptus multi-ply core provides the appearance and feel of solid timber with the dimensional stability required for Australian conditions. The cross-laminated core resists the expansion and contraction that causes solid timber to cup, gap, and buckle.
Solid European oak is still used in select applications — primarily in heritage restorations and projects where authenticity is paramount — but engineered construction is now the standard for new builds.
Sourcing and sustainability
Look for PEFC or FSC certification. The best European oak comes from managed forests in Central Europe where harvesting is regulated and replanting is mandatory.
Ask your supplier for chain-of-custody documentation — this traces the timber from forest to factory to site. Without it, there is no guarantee that sustainability claims are substantiated.
